Karim Benzema, the legendary French striker who has spent 14 years at Real Madrid, is reportedly leaving the Spanish club this summer to join the Saudi Pro League. According to ESPN, Benzema will sign a two-year contract worth €400 million with Al Ittihad, the current champion of the Saudi league. This deal is similar to the one that Cristiano Ronaldo, Benzema's former teammate at Madrid, accepted to join Al Nassr in December 2022.
Benzema has had an illustrious career at Madrid, winning 24 trophies, including five Champions Leagues, and becoming the club's second-highest all-time goal scorer with more than 350 goals. He also won the Ballon d'Or in October 2022 after a stellar season in which he scored 42 goals in all competitions. Benzema retired from international football in December 2022 after France lost the World Cup final to Argentina.
Benzema's move to Saudi Arabia is seen as part of the kingdom's ambitious plan to boost its profile in sports and host the 2030 World Cup. Benzema could become an ambassador for the competition and help attract other star players to the Saudi league. Lionel Messi, for instance, has been linked to Al Hilal, another Saudi club. However, Benzema's departure from Madrid will also leave a huge gap in the team's attack and raise questions about the future of one of Europe's most successful clubs.
