Haryana, a state in northern India, witnessed communal violence on August 1, 2023, when a religious procession by the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) was attacked by a mob in Nuh district. The violence resulted in the death of five people, including three home guards, and injured several others, including police officers. The mob also set fire to vehicles and shops belonging to people from the other community. The violence spread to other parts of the state, such as Gurugram and Faridabad, where internet services were suspended and educational institutions were closed. The Haryana government has imposed curfew in Nuh and deployed over 1,000 police personnel to maintain law and order. The Chief Minister of Haryana, Manohar Lal Khattar, has appealed to the people to maintain peace and harmony and said that strict action will be taken against the perpetrators of the violence. The opposition parties have also urged the people to refrain from violence and respect the brotherhood of Haryana. The violence is suspected to be part of a bigger conspiracy involving unidentified miscreants who engineered and masterminded the clashes. The police are investigating the role of Monu Manesar, a cow vigilante and Bajrang Dal member, who is wanted for the murder of two men in Rajasthan, and who was allegedly present during the VHP procession.
